Swing gate with an arm operator and a wall-mounted control box

US Automatic Patriot II Repair & Retrofit — Southern California

The dual-gate Patriot: two 12V actuators on one battery-run control board.

The US Automatic Patriot II is the dual-gate version of the Patriot, a heavy-duty linear actuator swing gate opener that runs from a 12V battery charged by AC or solar. The current manual rates it for UL 325 Classes I through IV and leaves up to 800 lb and 16 ft each. We diagnose and repair Patriot I and Patriot II openers on current and earlier control boards, including ones we didn't install.

01 — SYMPTOMS
6 COMMON FAULTS

Is your US Automatic Patriot II doing this?

SYMPTOM
LIKELY CAUSE
WHAT WE DO
SYMPTOMThe siren beeps three times, pauses 5 seconds, and repeats for a minute.
LIKELY CAUSEThe battery fell below 10.5V during a gate cycle. If it falls below 10V, the gate shuts down in the position set on the Battery Fail switch.
WHAT WE DOLoad test the battery, check the charging system, and replace the battery if it fails the test.
SYMPTOMThe board clicks but the gate does not move.
LIKELY CAUSEUS Automatic's first check: if the gate runs while the Type D button is held, a monitored safety device is stopping it. If the board still only clicks, the battery needs a load test.
WHAT WE DOHold the Type D button to isolate the problem, then repair the safety device or replace the battery.
SYMPTOMThe gate starts to open or close, then stops and reverses after a couple of seconds.
LIKELY CAUSEThe force dial is set too low, or the gate is hard to move. US Automatic says a setting of 5 runs most gates, and a gate that needs more than 8 probably has a problem: the wrong hinges, a gate touching the ground, a gate out of level, or a bent actuator arm.
WHAT WE DOFix the gate first, then set the force.
SYMPTOMOne gate opens or closes, then immediately reverses.
LIKELY CAUSEMost often a limit switch out of adjustment, or the gate crossing the photo eye's beam.
WHAT WE DOCheck the limit LEDs, re-set the actuator's limit screws by hand (US Automatic says not to use a power driver), and confirm the gate stays clear of the beam.
SYMPTOMThe open and close stop positions keep changing.
LIKELY CAUSEThe limit assembly inside the actuator has a gap between its gears.
WHAT WE DOOpen the back of the actuator, close the gap between the limit gears, retighten the assembly and re-set the limits.
SYMPTOMThe gate will not close by itself.
LIKELY CAUSEThe auto-close switch is off, both gate switches are on for a single gate, or the retract limit LED does not light when the actuator is fully retracted.
WHAT WE DOSet the switches to match the gate, and adjust the retract limit until its LED lights.

02 — DIAGNOSTICS
FROM THE MANUAL

Diagnostic notes

The Patriot board's LEDs stay dark until the LED indicator button is pressed and held, to save the battery. From the 500018 manual and US Automatic's troubleshooting articles:

Battery status LED solid red: the battery is good.

Battery status LED flashing: the battery fell below 10.5V during operation. Load test it.

Battery status LED off: the battery fell below 10V during operation. Load test it.

Siren beeping three times, pausing 5 seconds, repeating for 60 seconds: the battery fell below 10.5V during a gate cycle.

Alarm for 5 minutes: a second obstruction before the gate reached its limit. Press Reset to resume.

Current sense beeper: sounds whenever the obstruction circuit trips.

Both limit LEDs on at once: the operator will not run. They should never be on together.

Battery controller showing E11, E12 or E13: remove, charge and load test the battery.

A blown 15 amp board fuse usually means the gate could not move.

Board features differ by revision (500018 is current; 500001, 500002, 500016 and 500003 are earlier), so we read the part number before changing any switch settings.

03 — REPAIR OR REPLACE
THE HONEST CALL

Repair or replace your Patriot II?

Most Patriot II faults are repairable. The board, battery, charger, actuators, limit assemblies and cables are separate parts, and each gate can be tested on its own. Replacement makes sense when an actuator has failed late in its life, or when the leaf is beyond the rating: 800 lb and 16 ft each in the current manual, or 650 lb in the manual for the earlier 500002 and 500016 boards.

Retrofit options

An older Patriot board can be replaced with the current 500018 design, which US Automatic warrants for 5 years against 1 year on earlier boards. On the 500002 and 500016 boards, a system made before January 12, 2016 that is not being upgraded needs the pre-2016 jumper. Where a gate needs more cycles than battery and solar can give, an AC-powered operator with battery backup is the alternative.

Parts availability

The Patriot is a current US Automatic product, built in Lewisville, Texas and sold through distributors. US Automatic identifies board revisions by part number and serial prefix, so we read both before we schedule the repair.

04 — COST
5 FACTORS

What drives the cost

Scoped to your property, not a flat per-item rate. These are the factors that move the number, in the order they usually matter. The estimate is free.

FACTOR
WHY IT MATTERS
Fault type
A reset limit or a new battery costs less than a failed actuator or board.
Battery
A battery that fails its load test is replaced, and the warranty does not cover batteries.
Gate condition
A gate that needs a force setting above 8 usually needs hinge or leveling work as well.
Safety devices
Monitored eyes and edges are required. A missing one has to be added, not bypassed.
Board revision
An older board may be replaced with the current design rather than repaired.

US Automatic Patriot II FAQs

Who repairs US Automatic Patriot gate openers near me?

Veritas Access Solutions repairs US Automatic Patriot I and Patriot II openers across Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties, including openers another company installed. We read the board and test the battery, diagnose on site and give you a written diagnosis before any work. Call 661-605-3266, or text a photo of the control board.

Why does my Patriot siren beep three times and pause?

It means the battery fell below 10.5V during a gate cycle. Below 10V the gate shuts down in the position set on the Battery Fail switch. Load test the battery and check the charger or solar panel.

What is the difference between the Patriot I and Patriot II?

The Patriot I opens a single swing gate and the Patriot II a double gate. Both use the same control board and 12V battery; the Patriot II adds a second actuator and a 40 ft extension cable for the far gate.

Why does my Patriot gate start, then stop and reverse?

Usually the force dial is too low for the gate, or the gate is hard to move. US Automatic says a setting of 5 runs most gates. If yours needs more than 8, check for the wrong hinges, a gate touching the ground, a gate out of level or a bent actuator arm.

How do I open a Patriot gate by hand?

US Automatic says to turn DS1 switches 3 and 4 off first, then remove the manual release pin at the gate bracket and open the gate by hand. The pin can be secured with a pull clip or a padlock.

Can a Patriot II run on solar?

Yes. Every Patriot runs from a 12V battery charged by AC or solar. With the 10 W solar kit, US Automatic rates the Patriot II at 18, 28 or 48 cycles a day, depending on the solar zone.

What does US Automatic Patriot repair cost?

It depends on the fault, the board revision, the condition of the battery and actuators, and the gate itself. We price after an on-site diagnosis rather than over the phone, and the estimate is free.
