Swing gate with an arm operator and a wall-mounted control box

Nice/Apollo 1550 Repair & Retrofit — Southern California

A 12V linear actuator system that runs from a battery, charged by AC or solar.

The Nice/Apollo 1550 is a 12V DC linear actuator swing gate opener: an 816 screw-drive actuator on each leaf, run by a 936 control board from a battery charged by AC or solar. Nice rates it for leaves up to 16 ft and 600 lb. We diagnose and repair 1550 systems, including older units on the 1050 board and ones we didn't install, starting with the code on the board's display.

01 — SYMPTOMS
6 COMMON FAULTS

Is your Nice/Apollo 1550 doing this?

SYMPTOM
LIKELY CAUSE
WHAT WE DO
SYMPTOMAL is flashing on the display and the buzzer sounds for 5 minutes.
LIKELY CAUSEA hard shutdown: the gate met two obstructions back to back.
WHAT WE DOClear whatever is in the gate's path and press RESET. If it repeats, find the bind in the gate or hinges and check the force setting.
SYMPTOMThe gate opens a short distance, then stops and reverses.
LIKELY CAUSEThe UL or edge input is tripping, a limit LED is not working, something is in the way, or the force setting is too sensitive. The setting runs from 01, most sensitive, to 05, and Nice recommends 03.
WHAT WE DOCheck the UL/edge input and the limit LEDs, clear any obstruction, and adjust the force.
SYMPTOME1 on the display, or the gate only runs while a button is held.
LIKELY CAUSENo monitored safety device found. The 936 board will not operate normally without at least one monitored, working safety device in the close direction.
WHAT WE DORepair or connect the photo eye or edge, then press LEARN to clear E1, or remove and reapply battery power after a scanning error.
SYMPTOME4 on the display, or the gate stops partway.
LIKELY CAUSEThe actuator's encoder dropped out or failed while the gate was moving. A repeating E4 points to a faulty encoder or incorrect wiring.
WHAT WE DOCheck the actuator cable and connections, press any button to clear, and repair the wiring or the actuator if it returns.
SYMPTOMNo display at all.
LIKELY CAUSEA flat battery. The board runs only from its 12V battery, which AC or solar keeps charged.
WHAT WE DOTest and replace the battery, which Nice says to do every two years, and check the charger or solar panel.
SYMPTOMThe gate moves the wrong way, or the open and close limit lights are backwards.
LIKELY CAUSEThe motor wires or the limit wires are reversed at the board.
WHAT WE DOSwap the actuator's red and black motor wires to fix the direction, or its orange and white wires to fix the limit lights.

02 — DIAGNOSTICS
FROM THE MANUAL

Diagnostic notes

The 936 board shows two-character codes on its display. From the manual:

Lr flashing: the board has not learned its limits. Lr solid: ready for the learn cycle.

OP solid: open limit reached. CL solid: close limit reached.

-- solid: idle, with no limit active and the BlueBUS devices working.

AL flashing: hard shutdown, with the alarm sounding. Clear the obstruction and press Reset.

E1 flashing: no monitored safety devices detected. Press Learn once one is connected.

E2 flashing: no actuator sensed during learning. Plug the actuator in and cycle the power.

E3 flashing: the external EEPROM failed its read/write test.

E4 flashing: the actuator encoder dropped out during movement. A repeating E4 points to the encoder or the wiring.

Battery connector LED: green if the battery is wired correctly, red if it is reversed.

BlueBUS photo eye LED always on: no signal. Fast flashing: weak signal. Very slow flashing: best alignment.

03 — REPAIR OR REPLACE
THE HONEST CALL

Repair or replace your 1550?

Most 1550 faults are repairable. The display names the fault, and the 936 board, battery, charger, photo eyes and each 816 actuator are separate parts. Replacement makes sense when an actuator's motor or screw drive has failed late in its life, or when the leaf is beyond Nice's rating of 16 ft and 600 lb.

Retrofit options

Nice's TITAN actuator, rated 600 lb at 20 ft or 1,000 lb at 8 ft, fits the mounting geometry of 1500-series actuators, which makes it the step up for a heavier leaf. The current 816 actuator works with the 936, 1050 and Mercury 310 controllers, so an older 1550ETL can usually be repaired rather than replaced. We check the leaf, the brackets and the controller first.

Parts availability

Nice supports the 816 actuator as a current product and has moved the 936 controller documents to its legacy section. We confirm your controller, 936 or 1050, and the actuator part before we schedule the repair, and quote a current Nice controller where a board is no longer available.

04 — COST
5 FACTORS

What drives the cost

Scoped to your property, not a flat per-item rate. These are the factors that move the number, in the order they usually matter. The estimate is free.

FACTOR
WHY IT MATTERS
Fault type
A new battery or a reset force setting costs less than a failed actuator or board.
Battery and charging
Nice calls for a new battery every two years, and a solar site may need more panel.
Actuators
A failed encoder or motor means an actuator, one per leaf.
Safety devices
At least one monitored eye or edge is required. A missing one has to be added, not bypassed.
Number of leaves
A double gate has two actuators to diagnose and test.

Nice/Apollo 1550 FAQs

Who repairs Nice/Apollo 1550 gate openers near me?

Veritas Access Solutions repairs Nice/Apollo 1550 openers across Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties, including older 1550ETL units and openers another company installed. We read the board's display, diagnose on site and give you a written diagnosis before any work. Call 661-605-3266, or text a photo of the control board.

What does AL mean on my Apollo 1550 display?

AL flashing, with the buzzer sounding for 5 minutes, is a hard shutdown: the gate met two obstructions back to back. Clear the gate's path and press RESET. If it keeps happening, the hinges, the gate or the force setting need attention.

What do E1, E2, E3 and E4 mean on a Nice/Apollo 936 board?

E1: no monitored safety device detected. E2: no actuator sensed while learning. E3: the board's memory failed its test. E4: an actuator encoder dropped out while the gate was moving. Each points to a part or a connection, so we read the code before replacing anything.

Why does my 1550 gate open a little, then stop and reverse?

Nice's checklist: the UL or edge input, the limit LEDs, anything in the gate's path, and the force setting. Force runs from 01, most sensitive, to 05, and 03 is the recommended default.

How do I open a Nice/Apollo 1550 gate by hand?

Turn off the power, including any backup, then remove the hitch pin from the gate bracket, or take the bracket off the actuator, and open the gate by hand. Nice recommends the hitch pin and R-clip so the gate can be opened quickly in a power failure.

How long do Nice/Apollo 1550 batteries last?

Nice says to replace them every two years. The 1550 runs from a 12V sealed lead acid battery: 35 amp hours or larger on AC charging, 70 or larger on solar. A dark display usually means a flat battery.

What does Nice/Apollo 1550 repair cost?

It depends on the fault, whether a board or an actuator has failed, the battery and charging, and whether it is a single or double gate. We price after an on-site diagnosis rather than over the phone, and the estimate is free.
