Swing gate with an arm operator and a wall-mounted control box

HySecurity SwingSmart DC Repair & Retrofit — Southern California

A DC swing operator for single leaves up to 20 ft, with a display that names the fault.

The HySecurity SwingSmart DC is a 24V DC swing gate operator rated for UL 325 Classes I through IV, and the AC-powered DC 20 for continuous duty. Its capacity depends on leaf length: 1,300 lb at 12 ft, 800 lb at 16 ft and 600 lb at 20 ft. We diagnose and repair SwingSmart DC and DCS solar operators, including ones we didn't install, starting with the message on the display.

01 — SYMPTOMS
6 COMMON FAULTS

Is your HySecurity SwingSmart DC doing this?

SYMPTOM
LIKELY CAUSE
WHAT WE DO
SYMPTOMThe display shows ENTRAPMENT MODE and the gate will not move.
LIKELY CAUSEThe built-in entrapment sensor tripped while the operator was already in Safe Mode. A real obstruction, a binding hinge, wind on the leaf, a faulty edge or worn motor brushes can all trip it.
WHAT WE DOFind what the leaf hit or bound on, check the hinges, then reset with RESET or an Open or Stop command and test.
SYMPTOMThe arm moves but the gate does not, or the gate swings freely by hand.
LIKELY CAUSEThe taper clamp that holds the arm to the drive is loose or was left released. FAULT 4 GATE NO LOAD can point to a loose taper clamp or a linkage failure.
WHAT WE DOTighten the taper clamp in small steps until it holds against a simulated gate strike, check the linkage, then clear the fault.
SYMPTOMThe display shows FAULT 1 MOTOR RUN TIME.
LIKELY CAUSEThe motor ran longer than its maximum run time without reaching a limit. A broken drive belt, a broken limit plate or a slipping taper clamp are the causes the manual names.
WHAT WE DOReplace the belt or limit plate, tighten the clamp, reset the limit cams and test a full cycle.
SYMPTOMALERT 5 or ALERT 6 on the display.
LIKELY CAUSEALERT 5 means both limit switches are on at once, from a wiring short, a stuck switch or debris at the limit plate. ALERT 6 means a limit did not release when the operator started, usually a broken drive belt or something holding the arm.
WHAT WE DOClean the limit plate area, repair the switch or wiring, replace a broken belt, and test.
SYMPTOMThe gate will not close by itself, and the display shows FAULT 2.
LIKELY CAUSEA monitored photo eye is missing or failed its check. Swing operators need at least one monitored external sensor, and a second where there is a risk of entrapment in both directions.
WHAT WE DOFind the failed or mis-wired eye or edge, match its power to the input, and test.
SYMPTOMThe gate dies, or opens and stays open, when the power goes out.
LIKELY CAUSEWorn or disconnected backup batteries (ALERT 18 or ALERT 28), or the power-loss setting. The standard two 12V 8Ah batteries are rated for up to 300 cycles after AC power is lost.
WHAT WE DOTest and replace the batteries with AGM batteries, check the charging, and set the power-loss behavior you want.

02 — DIAGNOSTICS
FROM THE MANUAL

Diagnostic notes

The Smart DC Controller shows alerts, faults and errors as text on its display. Common ones from the manual's troubleshooting table:

SAFE MODE: an edge sensor or the built-in entrapment sensor tripped. The close timer stays off until the gate reaches a full limit or RESET is pressed.

ENTRAPMENT MODE: the entrapment sensor tripped again while in Safe Mode. The operator will not run until it is reset.

LOW 24VDC: battery voltage below 22V, about 80% depleted.

DEAD BATTERY: below 21V. The gate opens or closes automatically, depending on its setting.

ALERT 5 BOTH LIM ACTIVE: both limit switches are on at the same time.

ALERT 6 LIM NOT RELEASED: a limit did not release when the operator was told to move.

ALERT 13 STIFF GATE: the gate has taken more power to move over time. Logged only.

ALERT 18 CHANGE BATTERY: the batteries are not taking a charge.

ALERT 20 LI BLOCK OPEN: an interlock contact is closed, meaning the gate lock is engaged.

FAULT 1 MOTOR RUN TIME: the motor ran longer than the maximum run time.

FAULT 2 PHOTO EYE: a monitored photo eye is missing or failed its check.

FAULT 4 GATE NO LOAD: motor wires disconnected, the DC switch off, a linkage failure or a loose taper clamp.

ERROR 8 RPM SENSOR: the motor encoder or its wires are damaged or unplugged.

03 — REPAIR OR REPLACE
THE HONEST CALL

Repair or replace your SwingSmart DC?

Most SwingSmart DC faults are repairable. The display names the fault, and the controller, drive belt, limit switches, taper clamp, brushes and batteries are separate parts. Replacement makes sense when the motor or its 600:1 gearbox has failed late in the unit's life, or when the leaf is heavier than the rating for its length: 1,300 lb at 12 ft, 800 lb at 16 ft, 600 lb at 20 ft.

Retrofit options

A leaf beyond that rating needs an operator sized for it, or a slide gate where the site allows. HySecurity lists the SwingSmart DC for a single leaf, so a double gate takes two operators set up as a primary and secondary pair. We check leaf weight, length and the mounting before recommending either.

Parts availability

The SwingSmart DC is a current HySecurity product, built in the USA. Its batteries must be AGM. We confirm the controller, belt, limit or battery part for your unit before we schedule the repair.

04 — COST
5 FACTORS

What drives the cost

Scoped to your property, not a flat per-item rate. These are the factors that move the number, in the order they usually matter. The estimate is free.

FACTOR
WHY IT MATTERS
Fault type
A tightened taper clamp or reset limit cams cost less than a failed controller or motor.
Belt and limit plate
A broken belt or limit plate is replaced along with the repair that exposed it.
Batteries
HySecurity suggests new batteries after two years where backup matters, especially in hot climates.
Safety devices
At least one monitored sensor is required. A missing one has to be added, not bypassed.
Number of leaves
A double gate has two operators and a pairing link to test.

HySecurity SwingSmart DC FAQs

Who repairs HySecurity SwingSmart DC gate operators near me?

Veritas Access Solutions repairs HySecurity SwingSmart DC operators across Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties, including operators another company installed. We read the display, diagnose on site and give you a written diagnosis before any work. Call 661-605-3266, or text a photo of the display.

What does ENTRAPMENT MODE mean on my SwingSmart DC?

The built-in entrapment sensor tripped a second time while the operator was already in Safe Mode. The gate stops and will not run until it is reset with RESET, the button on the operator, or an Open or Stop push button. Find what the leaf hit or bound on first.

Why does my SwingSmart DC arm move but the gate doesn't?

The taper clamp that holds the arm to the drive is loose or was left released. Tighten it in small steps until it holds against a simulated gate strike, then clear any fault with STOP or RESET. If it will not hold, the clamp or linkage needs service.

Should I repair or replace my SwingSmart DC?

Repair, in most cases. The display names the fault, and the controller, belt, limit switches, clamp and batteries are separate parts. Replace it when the motor or gearbox has failed late in its life, or the leaf is beyond its rating: 1,300 lb at 12 ft, 800 lb at 16 ft, 600 lb at 20 ft.

What happens to a SwingSmart DC in a power outage?

It runs on two 12V 8Ah AGM batteries, rated for up to 300 cycles after AC power is lost. A setting decides the rest: open or close automatically when the batteries drop below 21V, open five seconds after the power goes out, or wait for an open command.

How do I open a SwingSmart DC gate by hand?

HySecurity recommends turning off the DC power first. Then extend the taper clamp handle and turn it counter-clockwise to release the arm, and push the gate. To restore, tighten the clamp until it no longer slips, turn DC power on and clear any fault with STOP or RESET.

What does HySecurity SwingSmart DC repair cost?

It depends on the fault, the condition of the belt, clamp and batteries, and whether it is a single or double gate. We price after an on-site diagnosis rather than over the phone, and the estimate is free.
