Iron swing gate across a drive on a wooded property

FAAC 390 Repair & Retrofit — Southern California

An articulated arm on the pillar, and a board that tells you what failed.

The FAAC 390 is a 24V articulated-arm swing gate operator that bolts to the pillar, rated in the US for leaves up to 14 ft and 600 lb. We diagnose and repair 390 operators and their E024U control board, including ones we didn't install, starting with the error code the board is already flashing.

01 — SYMPTOMS
6 COMMON FAULTS

Is your FAAC 390 doing this?

SYMPTOM
LIKELY CAUSE
WHAT WE DO
SYMPTOMGate stops and reverses partway, then stops dead on the next try.
LIKELY CAUSEObstacle detection. The board reverses the gate on the first obstacle it senses; on a second one in a row it stops the gate and ignores further commands. A real obstruction, a binding hinge or a torque setting that is too low all trigger it.
WHAT WE DORelease the leaf and check it swings freely by hand, fix the hinge or the obstruction, then reset torque on the E024U board and test again.
SYMPTOMRed error light flashing on the control board.
LIKELY CAUSEThe E024U board reports faults by flash count, from obstacle detection to a motor, encoder or fail-safe failure.
WHAT WE DORead the flash count, test the circuit it points to and fix that first, rather than replacing the board.
SYMPTOMThe leaf moves by hand and will not lock.
LIKELY CAUSEThe manual release is still disengaged. It is turned with an Allen wrench, about half a turn.
WHAT WE DORe-engage the release with the power off, test it, and replace a release that no longer holds.
SYMPTOMGate stops working when the power goes out.
LIKELY CAUSEThe two 12V backup batteries under the backplate are worn out, disconnected or were never fitted.
WHAT WE DOTest and replace the batteries, check the charging, and confirm the power-failure setting you want on the board.
SYMPTOMNo response, or the board will not finish a set-up.
LIKELY CAUSEA slowly blinking SET-UP light means the board needs its travel set up again. A dead board after a storm points to the power supply or the board itself.
WHAT WE DORun the set-up, test the 115V supply and the board power supply, and replace the board only if it has failed.
SYMPTOMArm stops short or overshoots at open or closed.
LIKELY CAUSEMounting geometry outside the dimensions in the installation manual, a loose arm, or optional limit switches out of adjustment.
WHAT WE DOCheck the bracket and arm against FAAC's installation tables, tighten or re-set the arm, and adjust the limit switches if they are fitted.

02 — DIAGNOSTICS
FROM THE MANUAL

Diagnostic notes

The E024U board reports faults by the number of flashes on its ERROR light.

1 flash: obstacle detection.

2 flashes: board in sleep mode.

3 flashes: motor 1 failure.

4 flashes: motor 2 failure.

5 flashes: encoder error on motor 1 or motor 2.

6 flashes: fail-safe failed.

7 flashes: board thermal protection active.

8 flashes: maximum run time reached without finding the positive stop (10 minutes).

The SET-UP light blinks slowly when a set-up is needed and quickly while a set-up is in progress.

03 — REPAIR OR REPLACE
THE HONEST CALL

Repair or replace your 390?

Most 390 faults are repairable. The board names the failed circuit, and the board, batteries, release and arm can each be replaced on their own. Replacement makes sense when the gearmotor has failed late in the unit's life, or when the leaf is heavier or longer than the 390 is rated for: 600 lb and 14 ft on the US version. A leaf past that rating needs an operator sized for it, not another repair.

Retrofit options

Where the pillar can't meet the 390's bracket dimensions, or the leaf is beyond its rating, the usual alternatives are a surface-mounted swing operator on the inside of the gate line, or an underground operator such as the FAAC 770N where the gate must stay visually clean and the site drains well. We confirm the geometry on site before recommending either.

Parts availability

The 390 is a current FAAC product, and the US version runs on the E024U control board. We confirm the exact board, battery or release part for your unit before we schedule the repair.

04 — COST
5 FACTORS

What drives the cost

Scoped to your property, not a flat per-item rate. These are the factors that move the number, in the order they usually matter. The estimate is free.

FACTOR
WHY IT MATTERS
Fault type
A torque reset or a new photocell costs less than a failed gearmotor.
Board or motor
The flash code usually tells us which one before anything is opened up.
Batteries
Worn backup batteries are a common add-on to an otherwise small repair.
Mounting
An arm installed outside FAAC's dimensions has to be re-set, not just repaired.
Number of leaves
A double gate has two operators to diagnose and test.

FAAC 390 FAQs

Who repairs FAAC 390 gate operators near me?

Veritas Access Solutions repairs FAAC 390 operators across Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties, including operators another company installed. We read the board's error code, diagnose on site and give you a written diagnosis before any work. Call 661-605-3266, or text a photo of the operator.

Why does my FAAC 390 gate stop and reverse?

Usually obstacle detection. The board reverses the gate when it senses an obstacle, and after a second one in a row it stops the gate and ignores further commands. A real obstruction, a binding hinge or a torque setting that is too low all cause it. One flash of the red ERROR light confirms it.

Should I repair or replace my FAAC 390?

Repair, in most cases. The board names the failed circuit, and the board, batteries, release and arm can each be replaced on their own. Replace the operator when the gearmotor has failed late in its life, or the leaf is beyond its rating of 600 lb and 14 ft on the US version.

What do the flashing lights on a FAAC 390 control board mean?

On the E024U board the red ERROR light flashes a count: 1 obstacle detection, 2 board in sleep mode, 3 motor 1 failure, 4 motor 2 failure, 5 encoder error, 6 fail-safe failed, 7 thermal protection active, 8 maximum run time reached. A slowly blinking SET-UP light means the board needs a set-up.

Can you service a FAAC 390 another company installed?

Yes. We check the arm against FAAC's installation dimensions, the board settings, the batteries and the safety devices before quoting, whoever installed it.

What does FAAC 390 repair cost?

It depends on the fault, whether the board or the gearmotor has failed, the condition of the batteries and how the operator is mounted. We price after an on-site diagnosis rather than over the phone, and the estimate is free.

How often should a FAAC 390 be serviced?

FAAC recommends checking the motor torque, the release and the safety devices at least every six months, and testing the gate operator monthly.
