01 — SYMPTOMS
6 COMMON FAULTS

Is your DoorKing 9100 doing this?

SYMPTOM
LIKELY CAUSE
WHAT WE DO
SYMPTOMAn alarm sounds, then the operator chirps every 5 seconds and will not run.
LIKELY CAUSEA hard shutdown. The built-in reverse sensor sensed two obstructions in a row before the gate finished its cycle, so the operator stopped and shut down its inputs.
WHAT WE DOFind what the gate hit or dragged on, check that it slides freely, then press the reset button or switch the power off and on, and test. It keeps its open and close positions.
SYMPTOMThe gate opens a short distance, then stops and reverses.
LIKELY CAUSEThe electronic box inside the operator is not fully down and secured, the clutch is slipping, the gate drags, or the reverse sensor is set too sensitive. The magnetic pickups must also sit within 1/8 inch of their cover.
WHAT WE DOSeat the electronic box, adjust the clutch, free the gate and re-adjust the reverse sensor, then check the pickups.
SYMPTOMThe operator stalls or will not run, with the Power LED on.
LIKELY CAUSEA missing monitored device, since the 9100 needs at least one in each direction of travel, two in all. A blocked photo beam or a chain that is too tight can also stall it.
WHAT WE DORestore or repair the sensors and their switch settings, clear the beam and set the chain tension, then test.
SYMPTOMThe gate opens but will not close.
LIKELY CAUSEAn input is holding it open, such as a loop detector, safety device or keypad with its LED on, or the operator is in a soft shutdown. For automatic closing, the timer switch must be on.
WHAT WE DORead the input LEDs, clear or repair the device holding the gate open, and send a command to reset a soft shutdown.
SYMPTOMThe gate coasts after stopping on a sloped drive.
LIKELY CAUSEThe Motor Hold switch is off. Off is correct for a level gate; on an inclined gate it keeps voltage on the motor so the gate does not coast.
WHAT WE DOSet Motor Hold for the site and confirm the gate stops and stays where it should.
SYMPTOMThe gate cannot be pushed open by hand during a power outage.
LIKELY CAUSEThe operator has the optional fail-secure release kit, which keeps the clutch locked until the release key is turned half a turn. Units with the standard fail-safe release can be pushed open, though it takes a strong push.
WHAT WE DOUse the release key, or change the release setup if the site needs the other behavior.

02 — DIAGNOSTICS
FROM THE MANUAL

Diagnostic notes

The 9100 uses no numbered error codes. The 4602 control board reports through LEDs and an alarm. From the manual:

Power LED: low-voltage power is reaching the board.

Input LEDs: should be off, lighting only when an input is active. One that stays on is holding the operator.

Pulse LEDs: blink while the operator runs. One that does not blink points to a magnetic pickup more than 1/8 inch from its cover.

UL 325 sensor LEDs: on or flashing points to that device or its wiring.

Alarm, then a chirp every 5 seconds: a hard shutdown after two obstructions in a row. Press the reset button, or switch the power off and on.

Soft shutdown: after one obstruction the gate reverses and waits for another command.

The clutch should slip only after striking an obstruction with no more than 75 lb of force.

03 — REPAIR OR REPLACE
THE HONEST CALL

Repair or replace your 9100?

Most 9100 faults are repairable. The board, motor, capacitor, clutch, belt, pulleys, chain and magnetic pickups are separate parts, and there are no fluids to leak. Replacement makes sense when the motor has failed late in the unit's life, or when the gate is beyond the 9100's rating of 1,000 lb and 30 ft, a rating that assumes a level gate.

Retrofit options

For a heavier or longer gate, DoorKing's 9150 is rated up to 1,500 lb and 45 ft with its 1 HP motor. The 9100 has no built-in battery, so a site that needs the gate to run through outages needs DoorKing's backup inverter or a DC slide operator such as the 9024. Pre-2016 9100 units can take DoorKing's 4602-010 replacement board; later units retrofit to the current 9100.

Parts availability

The 9100 is a current DoorKing product, built in Inglewood, and DoorKing publishes a replacement board, the 4602-010, for pre-2016 9100 and 9150 operators. We confirm your unit's board revision before we schedule the repair.

04 — COST
5 FACTORS

What drives the cost

Scoped to your property, not a flat per-item rate. These are the factors that move the number, in the order they usually matter. The estimate is free.

FACTOR
WHY IT MATTERS
Fault type
A clutch or reverse sensor adjustment costs less than a failed board or motor.
Chain and drive
A chain that is too tight or too slack, or a worn belt or pulley, is fixed along with the repair.
Safety devices
Two monitored devices are required, one for each direction. A missing one has to be added, not bypassed.
Release type
A fail-secure release kit adds a key release and a lock setting to check.
Gate condition
Wheels, rollers and guides that drag make the operator reverse, and need repair too.

DoorKing 9100 FAQs

Who repairs DoorKing 9100 gate operators near me?

Veritas Access Solutions repairs DoorKing 9100 operators across Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties, including older 9100-080 units and operators another company installed. We read the board LEDs, diagnose on site and give you a written diagnosis before any work. Call 661-605-3266, or text a photo of the operator.

Why does my DoorKing 9100 beep every 5 seconds and not run?

It is in a hard shutdown after sensing two obstructions in a row before the gate finished its cycle. Find what the gate hit, then press the reset button or switch the power off and on. The operator keeps its open and close positions.

Why does my DoorKing 9100 open a little and then reverse?

DoorKing's checklist: make sure the electronic box inside the operator is fully down and secured, the clutch is not slipping, the gate slides freely, and the reverse sensor is not set too sensitive. If those check out, the magnetic pickups may be too far from their cover.

Should I repair or replace my DoorKing 9100?

Repair, in most cases. The board, motor, capacitor, clutch, belt, chain and pickups are separate parts, and there are no fluids to leak. Replace it when the motor has failed late in its life, or the gate is beyond its rating of 1,000 lb and 30 ft on level ground.

How do I open a DoorKing 9100 gate by hand?

Most 9100s have the standard fail-safe release: with the power off, the gate can be pushed open, though it takes a strong push. Units with the optional fail-secure kit need the release key turned half a turn first. When power returns, the first open command relearns the limits.

How often should a DoorKing 9100 be serviced?

DoorKing's schedule is monthly checks of the clutch, reverse sensor, alarm, manual release and safety devices, and every six months the drive belt, chain, pulleys, wheels and guide rollers, with a full system check every 12 months.

What does DoorKing 9100 repair cost?

It depends on the fault, whether the board or motor has failed, the condition of the chain and drive, and the safety devices on the gate. We price after an on-site diagnosis rather than over the phone, and the estimate is free.
